*****************************Explanation

Gifu Hashima is a station on the Tokaido Shinkansen train line. The name has been put together from the two towns Gifu and Hashima, when the Shinkansen line passed there.


Gifu Hashima Eki 新幹線 岐阜羽島駅(ぎふはしまえき)

The station is 30 kilometers further away from Nagoya and 50 kilometers to go to Maibara. It is almost 400 km away from Tokyo.

The station opened in 1964, October 1, with this new name.

岐阜羽島駅前にある円空の一刀彫

In front of the station is a large replica of a statue of a carved Buddha from the famous Master Carver Enku, who lived in the area for a while.

Born in Nagasaki

This must be a Zen monk in a black robe and shaven head.
Maybe he tries to catch the Shinkansen train KODAMA.

This haiku reminds us of the monk Enku, see above.
